Itaewon Accident: At least 151 reportedly killed as Halloween crowd surge turns deadly in South Korea.
The bloodiest peacetime incident in recent memory in South Korea claimed the lives of more than 150 people when they were trampled in a sizable Halloween throng in Seoul on Saturday night, leaving several injured, according to the city’s fire service.
As many as 100,000 people, according to local news media, had crowded the winding lanes of the Itaewon nightlife district on Saturday evening for Halloween festivities, making it one of the noisiest events of the year in the nation’s capital when the crowd rush occurred.
Investigations are currently ongoing concerning the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident, however, Choi Seong-bum, chief of the Yongsan-gu Fire Department, said it was a “presumed stampede” and that many people fell, injuring at least 82.
