Virgil Abloh passed away on Sunday after a long and private battle with a “rare” form of cancer (cardiac angiosarcoma), his family announced on Sunday, November 28. He was 41 years old.

“We are devastated to announce the passing of our beloved Virgil Abloh, a fiercely devoted father, husband, son, brother, and friend,” Abloh’s family shared. “He is survived by his loving wife Shannon Abloh, his children Lowe Abloh and Grey Abloh, his sister Edwina Abloh, his parents Nee and Eunice Abloh, and numerous dear friends and colleagues.”

“For over two years, Virgil valiantly battled a rare, aggressive form of cancer, cardiac angiosarcoma. He chose to endure his battle privately since his diagnosis in 2019, undergoing numerous challenging treatments, all while helming several significant institutions that span fashion, art, and culture.”

He was the artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear collection from 2018. He was also the chief executive officer of the Milan-based label Off-White, a fashion house he founded in 2012.

Abloh entered the world of international fashion with an internship at Fendi in 2009, alongside American rapper Kanye West. He was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2018.

“I’m so so saddened and devastated to hear about the passing of our dear friend Virgil Abloh,” Kris Jenner shared. “I’m sending all of my love and prayers to his beautiful family. You are an angel, Virgil, and we love you.”

“Today, we sadly lost a visionary, cultural genius and friend, Virgil Abloh. He was one of my biggest influences, going beyond just fashion,” Dan Carter shared. “He was meant to receive my book this week which I wish I gifted him earlier so I could thank him for being such a powerful artistic presence to the creative process. My heart goes out to his family and his legacy will continue to live on. Rest easy legend.”
