James Byrd, 64, of Peoria has been identified as the man found dead floating in the Illinois River on Monday afternoon, according to the Peoria County Coroner’s Office.
An autopsy found Byrd drowned. There was no apparent trauma to his body, according to coroner’s office. It is unknown why he was in the water.
A toxicology test is pending.
The Peoria Police Department responded to a call concerning a body in the water at the riverfront near 300 S.W. Water St. around 2:43 p.m. Monday, May 29.
Peoria Fire Department Marine 1 members launched their boat to recover the body, discovering an adult male who was pronounced deceased at the scene at 3:36 p.m.
