Pete Newbon, Senior lecturer and an active LAAS campaigner has passed away. Pete reportedly died on Jan. 18, 2022. However, details regarding his cause of death is still unknown.
Dr. Pete Newbon was a passionate teacher who captivated students with his extensive understanding of literature. He was outspoken in his opposition to anti-Semitism. He is claimed to have prepared many students with the same ideals.
Dr. Newbon was a Jewish and an activist against anti-Semitism. In particular, he was one of several current and former Labour members who were active against anti-Semitism within Labour, and who played a major role in Labour’s humiliating defeat in the December 2019 general election. Dr Newbon resigned from the Labour Party after Jeremy Corbyn was elected Leader in September 2015, in protest against his antisemitism.
“We are grieving the loss of our dear friend and colleague Pete Newbon. Words cannot adequately express the sadness we are all feeling at his death,” LAAS Statement on Pete Newboa’s passing read.
“Pete was a kind, generous and decent man who will be desperately missed by all who knew him. We offer our deepest sympathy and support to his family, who he loved very much.”
“May your memory be a blessing Pete Newbon. My friend, work colleague and fellow activist,” Martyn Hudson Watts wrote. “We often used to meet in the common room at university to chat and talk books and politics. A scholar of romanticism whose innovative work on Hartley Coleridge will now remain incomplete.”
This is very sad news. RIP Pete Newbon https://t.co/o0JzoNrQoH
