Why was Arrested in ‘Bulli Bai’ app case?
As per the sources, the cyber cell of Mumbai police had been arrested three students. The three students who have been arrested in relation to the “Bulli Bai” app case, have been identified as Vishal Kumar Jha, an engineering student from Bengaluru, Shweta Singh from Uttarakhand, and Mayank Rawal, 21, a student. Mayank Rawal was arrested from the northern state in the early hours of Wednesday (05 January). Two other suspects, Shweta and Vishal are 18 and 21 years old respectively. Three of them belong to different states.
Previously, Satej Patil, Maharashtra Minister told TNM that the officials believe, there is a large network behind this case. He also said that the police have enough evidence to believe that the college student who was arrested in this case initially and others too were listed by someone else. He stated, “They were used by someone else to target these women, we want to expose them. We will look into whether they belong to any organization, party, etc.”
The Mumbai cyber police lodged an FIR against unknown people after several complaints that fake pictures of hundreds of Muslim women were shared for “auction” on the app named “Bulli Bai” that was hosted on the open-source software platform GitHub.
While there was no sale or auction, rather the app was intended to insult and humiliate the targeted women, many of them are vocal Muslim women who are quite active on social media platforms.
The cyber cell of Mumbai has lodged a case against the unknown developers of the app and Twitter accounts that have encouraged it. However, the auction of Muslim ladies took place on GitHub for the second time in less than a year.
