Harley Balic Death – Cause of Death: Former Melbourne and Fremantle player, Harley Balic has passed away unexpectedly.
Balic had a couple of years with Fremantle and Melbourne and produced some excellent football in the WAFL, VFL and VAFA. He retired from the AFL in 2018 and has cited his personal struggles with mental health over the years.
The former AFL midfielder died aged 25 from alleged suicide on Sunday, January 9, 2022.
Balic played in Peel Thunder’s 2016 WAFL premiership triumph over Subiaco. He announced his retirement at the age of 21 in August 2018. In a statement he said;
“It’s something I’m not going to regret and I’m very appreciative to Melbourne for letting me come to the club for a second chance. I’ve always loved football, but my heart’s not in it and everything ends up being a grind and I think it’s just the right thing to do.”
“10 years ago, I had the pleasure of coaching Vic Metro Under 16 to a National Championship,” Ross Clark wrote. “It was one of the closest group of players I have ever coached.”
“Sadly last night one of these terrific young men passed away. Harley Balic, you were a fantastic basketballer, footballer and more importantly person. Your loss is heartbreaking and my deepest thoughts and prayers go out to Nancy Melatti Balic and the Balic family.
Our 10 year anniversary this year won’t be the same without you there mate but I promise you will always be a part of it.
RIP Harley you will be missed.”
