Nancy Worley was a Democratic politician who was Alabama’s Secretary of State from 2003 to 2007 and Chairman of the Alabama Democratic Party from 2013 to 2019.

Worley’s death was confirmed by her friend and long-time coworker Joe Reed. “We lost a good person, a genuine person. She was a person who loved this state and worked to make it better,” Reed said.

Worley served on many commissions across the state of Alabama as an advocate for educators and women. She taught for 25 years in the Decatur School System, and served two terms as the president of the Alabama Education Association (AEA) from 1983-1984 and 1995-1997.

She won various teaching awards including Teacher of the Year; a Teacher Hall of Fame nominee; honored by the Alabama Jaycees as Alabama’s Outstanding Young Educator; and Good Housekeeping’s “100 Young Women of Promise.”

“Sad to hear of the passing of my friend Nancy Worley,” Missy Miles wrote. “She was a huge supporter of the arts and attended the Jerry Brown Arts Festival for many years. She also attended many events throughout the entire state. Nancy encouraged me to join the Alabama Gourd Society and remained connected to my journey and commissioned me to design her own gourd. She always sent a holiday newsletter every year highlighting all her adventures and how she was promoting our great state. She was a joyful soul and will be missed by many.”
