Rev. Matthew Southall Brown Sr. Death: WWII hero Rev. Matthew Southall Brown Sr. passes away

Rev. Matthew Southall Brown Sr. Death – Cause of Death: Rev. Matthew Southall Brown Sr. who spent 35 years leading St. John Baptist Church passed away on Sunday, November 21, family announced. He was 99 years old.

While in Europe, Rev. Matthew Southall Brown Sr. was one of the about 5,000 African American soldiers who voluntarily applied for a transfer to the infantry when military commanders saw no other option than to temporarily desegregate the armed forces as a result of mounting casualty numbers.

After completing his basic infantry training in March 1945, he served with the 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division during the remainder of the war.

Rev. Brown was much more than a pastor, he was also a true American hero as he became one of the first black soldiers to fight in World War II.

“Pastor Brown was a wonderful man of God who was not only a pillar within our church community but the city of Savannah. We send our condolences, prayers and love to his family and all the lives he touched.”
