Roy Sargeant Death – Cause of Death: National Arts Festival co-founder, Roy Sargeant has passed away.
Roy Sargeant is one of South Africa’s doyens of theatre, producer/director.
“It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of Roy Sargeant; theatre luminary and educator,” National Arts Festival Makhanda announced. Roy together with Prof Guy Butler, co-founded the National Arts Festival in 1974.
“Deeply saddened to hear the news this morning from South Africa, of the passing of Professor Roy Sargeant,” Dublin Gay Theatre Festival shared via Facebook page. “Roy, through Artscape, pioneered the award winning appearances of wonderful lgbt+theatre at our festival, especially during the early years.”
“He found as a director, great plays to do and assembled such talent on stage and in the technical crew. We learned a lot from those wonderful diverse productions. He was a pioneer.”
Roy’s career as a producer, director, writer and impresario spanned academia, television and theatre.
He was instrumental in the establishment of the NAF Student Theatre Festival, Standard Bank Young Artist Awards and NAF Winter School. He also established the Baxter and Artscape New Writing Programmes.
“His valuable impact on the South African theatre scene and the individual lives of so many in the arts will live on,” Business and Arts South Africa wrote.
