Rapper Lil Tjay Shot: Did Lil Tjay Passed Away?

According to TMZ, New York artist Lil Tjay was shot in Edgewater shortly after midnight Wednesday. The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office stated two 22-year-olds were shot at The Promenade shopping complex around 12:05 a.m. At the site, one person was discovered with several gunshot wounds outside a Chipotle.

Another was discovered with a single gunshot wound at a neighboring Exxon station on River Road. According to prosecutors, one victim was rushed to the hospital in serious condition but is now stable, and the other was admitted with non-life threatening injuries and is in “excellent” health.

The prosecutor’s office said in a tweet Wednesday afternoon that the shooting “does not appear to be a random act.” According to TMZ, Lil Tjay, actual name Tione Merritt, underwent emergency surgery on Wednesday morning, citing law enforcement sources.

After 7 a.m. Wednesday, Edgewater police and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office were at the shopping center scrutinizing a red Dodge Durango with a bullet hole in the driver’s window. A blood-stained towel was also examined by police.

Tjay has 7 million Instagram followers and has released two studio albums with Columbia Records, both of which placed in the top five on the Billboard 200. “Calling My Name,” his 2021 collaboration with singer 6lack, premiered at number three on the Billboard Hot 100.

Tjay wrote on his Instagram story on Tuesday night: “Just because you’ve been around a person doesn’t make you entitled to the fruits of that persons labor. Envy Is At An All Time High Be Safe Otchea.”

The incident occurred at the western end of City Place, a mixed-use building on a former Hudson River industrial site that includes retail and restaurants on the ground floor and five stories of high-end residences above.

The complex is frequently busy in the evening, but it quiets down significantly once the restaurants and shops close. The compound is guarded 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with guards in cars patrolling the grounds. Hatice Mumcu, who works and lives in the complex, said she didn’t hear or see the gunshot and was astonished to learn about it Wednesday afternoon, adding that nothing like this has ever happened there.

Despite the incident, Adel Gobran, who is staying at the Homewood Suites around the corner from the Chipotle, said he is not concerned about staying there. Prosecutors did not specify whether any suspects were apprehended or charged in relation to the incident.
