William Henry Crone Biography: Death – Obituary

On November 6, William Henry Crone IV passed away in the company of his devoted family.

Bill was raised in Portsmouth, Virginia, where he was born on June 17, 1942. He obtained a commission into the American military after graduating from Virginia Military Institute and Churchland High School. He served in the Vietnam War as a 2nd Lieutenant for the Army and was given the Bronze Star for his service. Bill wed Dyan Rich, his high school sweetheart, in June 1964, and the two had five kids together.

After his time in the Army ended in 1965, Bill started a long and illustrious career with the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) at the Norfolk Naval Base, where he also completed a master’s degree.

As the Director of the Engineering and Design Division for the Atlantic Division, Bill retired in 2001. Bill, who was never one to sit around doing nothing (unless it was on the sand with a fishing pole in hand), leapt into retirement with zest, acting as co-founder and CEO of Psycho Deck Builders as well as on the board of directors at Maryview Hospital.

Bill was an active volunteer with the Corolla Wild Horse Rescue Foundation and the Water’s Edge Village School later in his “second retirement.” His famed North Beach wild horse trips frequently included a stop with guests at his own beachfront home.

Bill was always a mentor, offering advice and companionship to everyone he came into contact with. Even those who needed him the most, he never gave up on. His wife, his countless children and grandchildren, beach days, and “QFT” (Quality Family Time) with his favorite people were his greatest pleasures in life.

Bill is survived by his wife Dyan and his five children, Brady Crone, Lory White (David Powers), Bill Crone (Maureen), Dusty Crone (Jo Cole), and (Heather). “Daddy/Hoppy” was the proud great-grandfather of Blakely and the proud grandfather of Alli, Tanner, Amity, Connor, Haven, Sophie, Carson, Burke, Ella, Campbell, Everly, Addison, and Molly. Along with a large number of devoted family members and friends, he also leaves behind his siblings Jane Robinson, Kenny Crone (Susan), and Cathy Jordan.

His parents, his grandson Tanner Crone, and his brother-in-law Richard Jordan all passed away before him.

Bill will be remembered for his dedication to our nation, his tenacity, his mentoring, and, above all, for being a devoted husband and father.

The Crone family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the outstanding nursing personnel at the Outer Banks Hospital for their assistance during some of the most trying times in our lives.

On Thursday, November 17, at 1 PM, a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Resurrection, 3501 Cedar Lane, Portsmouth, VA, to honor Bill’s life. The Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery will host the burial that follows.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel is handling arrangements.
