Really sad to hear Carmen Callil has died. She was already a legend when I started in publishing & I have always had the utmost respect for the work she did for women writers. A huge huge loss for our industry.

We are saddened to hear of the death of Carmen Callil, co-founder of Virago Press, who was a judge of both the Booker and International Booker Prizes. She did more for literature by women – and by extension for everyone – than almost anyone in the latter half of the 20th century
