The deceased victim in a three-vehicle collision in Cass County, that left four others injured on Friday night has been identified as 41-year-old Sarah Proctor of Mishawaka, Indiana.

According to police, officers responded to the area of M-60 Highway and Anderson Road in Howard Township for a reported three-vehicle crash involving two passenger vehicles and a semi-truck were at approximately 5:30 p.m.

Upon officers arrival at the scene, preliminary investigations revealed Proctor was stopping in the roadway of M-60 to turn onto Anderson Road when 34-year-old Bridgette Garza of Dowagiac rear-ended Proctor’s vehicle while she was traveling southwest on M-60.

Garza’s car continued to veer off the road and end up on its side. The semi-truck being operated by Dale Rieder, 72, of Niles, collided with Proctor’s vehicle after being forced into the northeast lane of traffic.

On the spot, Proctor was declared dead. Three people were in the car being driven by Garza at the time of the collision, including a 13-year-old. Garza was among the passengers who were all brought to the hospital.

Proctor was a second-grade teacher at Justus Gage Elementary School.

“I write this message with a heavy heart and deep sadness,” Dowagiac Union Schools Superintendent Jonathan Whan wrote in a letter to parents, teachers and community members. “We learned that last night, one of our second-grade teachers, Sarah Proctor, was involved in a tragic car accident where she lost her life. We do not have any more details beyond what has been shared by the Sheriff’s department, but please take a moment to remember her family and friends in your thoughts and prayers this morning.”
