In the Upper Peninsula, on Friday, January 27, two people perished in a head-on collision with a semi-truck. According to a news release, Michigan State Police were called to the multiple vehicle collision on U.S. 2 in Delta County at 3:55 p.m.
According to authorities, a semi-truck driver traveling west lost control and began to veer into the north side of the highway. In an attempt to make a correction, the driver turned south, crossed the center line, and collided directly with an eastbound Toyota SUV.
At the scene, two Toyota SUV occupants were confirmed dead. Gerald Weaver, 47, and Tara Weaver, 46, both from Escanaba, were the victims, according to the police.
The Canadian semi-truck driver escaped without harm.
On US 2, a Chevrolet SUV traveling east struck the back of the semi-truck trailer after the original collision.
The driver, a 38-year-old Wisconsin resident from Oshkosh, was freed by rescue workers after being trapped inside the car. In the collision, he sustained many broken bones.
Then, as they attempted to stop in order to leave the area, a semi-truck and a passenger car crashed. According to police, nobody was hurt in the secondary collision.
For more than four hours, U.S. 2 was stopped as authorities cleaned up the area.
According to the police, speed and driving too fast for the circumstances were factors in the collision, which is still under investigation.
