Paul Erling Johnson was born in England in 1938. He is a well-known sailor and boat builder. He was 83 when he died on June 28, 2021. Friends of a world-famous sailor, boat builder, and frequent visitor to Bermuda said that his motto in life was, “Never be afraid to be terrified.”
Johnson, who was famous for sailing across the Atlantic alone at age 16, died last month on the island of Carriacou in the Caribbean, where he lived on his last boat, Cherub. Many of his boats were popular in Bermuda and are still used today.
Mr. Johnson was born on a sailboat on the Hamble River in England. He spent the rest of his life on different boats he made.
