Luke Siegel Car Accident – Obituary News: In loving memory of beloved New Orleans Saints fan, Luke Siegel.
Luke Siegel, a fan of the New Orleans Saints who became friends with former quarterback Drew Brees after a serious accident, died on Thursday, August 19, from Covid pneumonia. From what the family has said on social media, Luke was taken to the hospital earlier this week. He had just turned 15.
Luke Siegel, the 9-year-old son of former Texas Tech tennis coach and Rummel High School graduate Tim Siegel, was seriously hurt in a golf cart accident in July 2015. Luke was hurt in the head and chest when the car crashed. He was at Cooks Children’s Hospital for four months before he went home to Lubbock, Texas.
Drew Brees, a former quarterback for the Saints, and other members of the Saints family got together to help Luke. They also started a foundation called “Team Luke Hope For Minds” in his name.
Two weeks after the accident, while the family was still in the hospital, Brees sent them a video. Tim Siegel said that he showed Luke that video at least a thousand times and talked to Luke every day about Drew Brees.
Luke was able to meet his hero in October 2016. Luke’s old quarterback gave him a game ball, which is still in Luke’s room.
Tim Siegel said on a New Orleans Saints podcast in December 2020, “Sometimes people put athletes on a pedestal they probably don’t deserve to be on. But I can tell you with all my heart that Drew Brees deserves to be on that pedestal because of what he’s meant to Luke and to our family.”
