Kevin James was appointed founding director of the new School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences inside the College of Science. Kevin James is well known for bringing number theory research and education programs to Clemson University. After taking over as the school’s interim director in January 2019, James has assembled a group of enthusiastic, perceptive, and committed leaders.
Since joining the faculty in 2000, James has been conducting research on elliptic curves that are connected to the distribution of primes, particularly the Lang-Trotter and Sato-Tate conjectures and related subjects. He enjoys seeing how this field has developed over time, in part because of the work of undergraduate researchers.
James has served as the principal investigator on many National Science Foundation (NSF) REU contracts, which allow outstanding undergraduates from other schools to carry out summer research projects with Clemson faculty.
James has held a number of executive positions in the mathematical and statistical sciences, including graduate studies coordinator and coordinator of cybersecurity outreach.
He has authored 36 articles in academic journals and supervised the research for 17 PhD and master’s degree applicants. James earned both his doctorate in mathematics and his bachelor’s degree in mathematics and computer science from the University of Georgia.
Alexa and Robert are the couple’s grown children. James is married to Letitia. In his spare time, he likes to go boating on the local lakes around the school and work out at the Fike Recreation Center.
