Kaylin Gillis Obituary News: In loving memory of woman killed in Upstate NY “mistaken identity” shooting.
After the car she was riding in accidentally went to the incorrect address and was met with gunshots in the driveway, a woman in upstate New York who was seeking for a friend’s residence was shot to death, according to investigators.
On Saturday night, Kaylin Gillis, 20, and three other passengers were going through the little village of Hebron when they took the wrong route and ended up on the property.
According to Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy, the homeowner, 65-year-old Kevin Monahan, came out onto his porch as they were attempting to turn the car around and fired two rounds.
A bullet struck Gillis.
According to Murphy, who noted that the incident occurred in an area with spotty cell phone coverage, the group traveled to the nearby town of Salem, northeast of Albany and close to the Vermont state line, and dialed 911. When the emergency crews came, they tried CPR on Gillis but were unsuccessful.
Monahan reportedly refused to come out when police showed up at his home to look into the incident, according to Murphy. Before being brought into custody, according to the sheriff, authorities spoke with him for approximately an hour over the phone and in person.
On the basis of a second-degree murder accusation, Monahan was lodged in the Warren County jail. It wasn’t known if he had a lawyer who could speak for him.
