Billy Barker, 49, of Galena was arrested at the crime scene last night after police say he fatally shot Levi Porter, 27, of Riverton.
Groves states that the two men knew each other, but he cannot elaborate until formal charges are lodged.
Barker is being held without parole in the Cherokee County jail on a charge of second-degree murder.
In Galena, a fatal shooting occurred just before 9:00 p.m. tonight (Tuesday) in the 800 block of Columbus Street (near West Empire Street). Law enforcement is currently on the scene.
The victim of the fatal shooting was a male. However, officials do not remark on the suspect’s specifics.
We spoke with Sheriff David Groves of Cherokee County, who was on the scene.
“At this juncture in our investigation, we are processing the crime scene and conducting interviews with witnesses and potential suspects. Therefore, I would not say that anyone is currently in police custody at this time.
However, law enforcement is conducting interviews with individuals who may be witnesses or potential suspects, according to Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves.
Law enforcement in Cherokee County and Galena are investigating the incident.
