I am shocked and deeply saddened at the loss of my dear friend John Brown Sr. yesterday. John was a mentor and a huge encourager to me. I will miss hearing him tell me all of the stories that only he could tell in true John Brown fashion. We were both from the small town of Gilbert, Louisiana. John’s musical talent as a drummer was unmatched. He was a member of Loretta Lynn‘s band, “The Coal Miners” for many years. He also played for Dolly Parton and a number of other artists. Among many of his friends were some of Nashville‘s finest session players.
The only thing bigger than John’s talent was his heart. I will never forget many years ago in Nashville during Fan Fair how he brought Fred Swift to town and arranged for Fred to meet all the country stars. That was probably the happiest moment in Fred’s life.
John was so good to me and would let me tag along with him to the Opry when Loretta would be playing. The last time I saw John was in Nashville a few weeks ago. He had recently re-joined his fellow Coal Miners on the road in a wonderful tribute to Loretta Lynn. I took a few photos of him that night, and I will post them later on here. Please keep his son and family in your prayers. Right now he’s probably playing in that great hillbilly band in Heaven, and Loretta is standing right beside him, along with his precious mom, Mrs. Jean Brown. It’s a sad day in Gilbert. Rest in peace my friend.
