Renowned ophthalmologist K. Bhujang Shetty, aged 69, has passed away in the city on Friday evening. According to sources, he passed away at a private hospital in Yeshwanthpur after suffering a massive cardiac arrest on Friday evening.
The esteemed position of Chairman at Narayana Netralaya, a super specialty eye hospital located in Rajajinagar, was held by none other than Dr. Bhujang Shetty. A notable cardiac surgeon and founder of Narayana Health, Dr. Devi Shetty, has a close relative who is making headlines.
Dr. Shetty, a distinguished alumnus of Bangalore Medical College, completed his undergraduate medical course in 1978 and his ophthalmology residency in Minto Ophthalmic Hospital in 1982. Subsequently, he commenced his practice at a modest clinic in the 1980s, which has since flourished into Narayana Netralaya, a preeminent super specialty eye hospital in the state.
He was also a fervent advocate for eye donation within the state. In 1994, he achieved a significant feat by persuading the renowned Kannada film star, Dr. Rajkumar, to support his cause. As a result, the Dr. Rajkumar Eye Bank was established, fulfilling the actor’s promise to donate his eyes posthumously. The eye bank has achieved remarkable success in granting sight to countless individuals. In a touching gesture, the family of the late Dr. Rajkumar and Puneeth Rajkumar have donated their eyes to the eye bank.
In a recent tweet, Chief Minister designate Siddaramaiah expressed his condolences over the passing of an individual who had helped numerous individuals regain their sight, bringing hope and brightness to their families. According to KPCC president D.K. Shivakumar, he is regarded as one of the top doctors in the state. Shivakumar also praised the doctor for his forward-thinking approach and his efforts to raise awareness about health among the public.
