Chicopee resident W. Kaween Fernando, aged 36 and hailing from the Willimansett area, passed away on Thursday, May 25th, 2023. Surrounded by his loving family, he peacefully passed into Eternal Life at his home.
Colombo, Sri Lanka – Kaween Fernando, the cherished offspring of Welisarage M. and Deepthi (Mendis) Fernando, was born on October 17, 1986. At the tender age of three, he and his family made the life-changing decision to immigrate to the United States. They initially resided in Brooklyn and Long Island, New York before eventually settling in Chicopee in 1998, where he spent the rest of his days.
After completing his studies at Chicopee High School, he went on to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering from Northeastern University in Boston. The deceased was a member of the Saint Anthony of Padua Church in Chicopee. The individual found great pleasure in the culinary arts, particularly in the preparation of their preferred and distinctive cuisine. In addition to his passion for music, Kaween had a fondness for trivia and exploring wineries and vineyards. He also cherished spending time at the beach with his beloved fiancée.
A man who was deeply committed to his community and actively engaged in local politics has been reported. Above all, he was a devoted son, brother, fiancé, and friend. With boundless devotion, he showered his family and friends with love and care.
The late individual is survived by a loving fiancée, Dr. Mahawa Sam of Worcestor, as well as devoted sisters, Kawinthi N. Fernando and her husband, Jeffrey Busha, of Haverhill, Malinthi L. Fernando of Worcester, and Dinithi C. Fernando of Chicopee. Additionally, the individual is survived by a dear aunt, Swineetha Fernando and her husband, Ananda Amarasinghe, and their family, of Staten Island, NY; two dear uncles, Ranjan Mendis and his wife, Sharmila Tissera, and their family, of Chicopee, and Rohan Mendis and his wife, Maureen Mendis, and their family, of Floral Park, NY. The individual also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins, numerous friends, and extended family members in the United States, Sri Lanka, and abroad.
The funeral of the deceased will take place on Thursday, June 1, 2023. The proceedings will commence at the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, located at 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. The funeral home will open its doors at 8:30 a.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. and will be held at Saint Anthony of Padua Church, situated at 56 Saint Anthony Street, Chicopee, MA 01013. Following the Mass, the burial of the deceased will take place at Sainte Rose Cemetery, located at 49 Olsen Street in Chicopee, MA 01020.
The family of the deceased has announced that a visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend and pay their respects. The funeral home, situated at 20 Lafayette Street in Chicopee, MA 01020, has its parking lot and main entrance located at the rear of the building. The family of Kaween has requested that, instead of flowers, those wishing to honor his memory make memorial donations to Peralanda Church in Peralanda, Sri Lanka.
