Sister Jacquetta Taylor, the former CEO of Mercy and the founder of the Mercy Foundation, passed away this past weekend in Omaha, Nebraska, only a few days after turning 90.
Sr. Jacquetta was one of nine children raised in Willows, California. She was an incredible visionary for Mercy and our neighborhood. The campus was moved from its original location on Madrone Street to our current campus, where Mercy and Linus Oakes are now, thanks in large part to Sr. J (as she was affectionately called). She understood that if Mercy was to prosper, the location needed to change. From 1971 to 1996, she served as Mercy’s CEO. During her tenure, she established Mercy Foundation in July 1973.
Lisa Platt, a personal friend of Sister J and the current president of the Foundation, says, “There is usually one person in your life who really makes a difference, and for me, that person was Sr. J. She showed me the genuine meaning of appreciation, generosity, selflessness, and humility. She will be sadly missed by me.
She left her position as CEO of Mercy in 1996 and moved back into her cherished house on the Umpqua River.
She learned to play golf, kayak the Umpqua River, and play frisbee golf at the age of 72 because she was never afraid of a challenge. She made her own watering system for her yard, where she grew the best tomatoes, lemon cucumbers, and roses, as well as a highly sophisticated cat door and fence for her five indoor cats.
She moved to Omaha in 2015 while being looked for by the Sisters of Mercy. Through our Mercy Foundation, her legacy of compassion and service is still being carried on.
