Don Bateman Obituary – Cause of Death: Don Bateman, a former engineer with Honeywell International who is credited with the creation of a cockpit warning system that warns pilots about potentially fatal obstructions in their path over land and water, passed away on May 21 in his Bellevue, Washington, home. He was 91.
His daughter Katherine McCaslin said that problems from Parkinson’s disease were his cause of death.
Bateman’s warning system, known as controlled flight into terrain (CFIT), is the aviation term for when pilots crash after becoming disoriented in the dark, misreading instruments, or deviating from flight paths. By combining radio altimeter data with GPS maps, Bateman’s warning system became an elegant yet straightforward solution to the vexing problem of CFIT.
