Police have not identified the suspect, but reports have identified him as Derrick John Thompson, the son of former Democratic state Rep. John Thompson.
In Minneapolis on Friday night, five young women were killed when a driver who ran a red light struck their car.
The victims were identified as Sabiriin Ali, 17, Sahra Gesaade, 20, Salma Abdikadir, 20, Sagal Hersi, 19, and Siham Adan, 19, according to a community fundraiser.
Around 10:12 p.m., a Minnesota state trooper stationed on I-35 north close to 46th Street reportedly noticed a fast car. Before a traffic stop could be started, the car immediately left the highway. Then, at the junction of Lake Street and Second Avenue, the car ran a red light and slammed with a car carrying the five women, who were all declared dead at the spot.
The suspect got out of the car and ran from the crime site, but he was eventually apprehended. For a medical evaluation, he was brought to Hennepin County Medical Center.
“We find ourselves in deep sorrow today, for our community experienced a heartbreaking tragedy last night. We have lost five of our bright, young sisters in a severe car accident,” the Dar Al Farooq Center said in the fundraiser. “These young Muslim sisters were shining stars of hope for our future.”
