13-year-old boy drowns in boating mishap at camp
This week’s early watercraft mishap at a Christian camp close to Detroit Lakes resulted in the death of a teenager.
The North Central Camp Cherith event on Thursday resulted in the death of a 13-year-old, according to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office.
Benjamin Rennie, 13, of Andover/Coon Rapids, and another youngster were on an inner tube being towed by a Camp Cherith staffer at around 4:15 p.m. on Lake Six, which is located about 10 miles south of Detroit Lakes, according to the sheriff’s office. Rennie was unintentionally struck by the boat when camp staff attempted to rescue the children after they fell off.
The executive director of the camp said in an online post that staff members attempted to save the teen and provided emergency care. But he passed away there and there.
The camp’s statement concluded, “Please pray for this camper’s family and all those hurting after the disaster.
No criminal charges, according to the sheriff’s office, are anticipated.
