Luis Rodriguez-Garcia Death: Authorities identify swimmer who drowned in the Edisto River.
The Dorchester County Coroner has identified the swimmer who perished in the Edisto River on Sunday.
According to Coroner Paul Brouthers, 19-year-old Luis Rodriguez-Garcia was the swimmer who perished in the Edisto River close to Givhans Ferry State Park.
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office, and Dorchester County Fire Rescue located Rodriguez-Garcia’s body on Monday afternoon.
Following reports of a probable drowning, search and recovery efforts got underway on Sunday. However, as night fell and storms were on the horizon, the search had to be suspended. It was then resumed on Monday morning.
According to Lt. Rick Carson of the DCSO, the man was swimming in the middle of the river with companions when someone noticed him sinking.
Tuesday at MUSC will see an autopsy. The coroner’s office and DCSO are looking into it.
