Helen Toth Obituary Hamilton: In loving memory of Helen Toth, one of Hamilton’s first female uniformed police officers.
Helen Toth died at the age of 85 in Henderson, Nevada, on April 6. Toth joined the department on January 9, 1959, as a 21-year-old coming from a part-time bank job.
She was determined to keep her pregnancy a secret so she could continue working as long as possible because she loved her job so much.
In 1962, Toth was expecting Carla, her first child. There was no such thing as maternity leave back then, so she would have to quit her job when Carla was born. In Canada, paid maternity leave didn’t start until 1971.
