Cynthia Lai Obituary – Cause of Death: Toronto councillor running for re-election, Cynthia Lai passes away.
Toronto city councillor Cynthia Lai died unexpectedly on Friday, October 21, 2022.
Lai was hospitalized on October 20 during the 2022 election campaign. She died at the age of 68, just three days before the municipal election. She had been suffering from gallbladder cancer.
Flags at City Hall, Metro Hall and the Toronto civic centres are to be flown at half-mast, and the Toronto Sign was dimmed in her honour.
Lai was the first Chinese-Canadian woman to serve as president of the Toronto Real Estate Board.
Cynthia Lai and I were the new Scarborough Councillors in 2018. She was a fierce advocate for her community & Chinese-Canadians across the city. I will miss her dearly and have many fond memories. My heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, staff and supporters💔 #ScarbTO pic.twitter.com/L5FjRuiDf0
