Matias Goncalo Ramos, who was born in Olho, came through Benfica’s youth academy. In 2019, he joined Benfica B and was promoted to the first team a year later. Ramos established himself as an important player for the club after three seasons with the first team.

On 2 August, Ramos scored his first career hat-trick in a home win over Midtjylland in the first leg of the 2022-23 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round.

His prolific form saw him score two more goals and provide two assists as part of a partnership with newly signed teammate David Neres, including a goal and an assist in the win over Dynamo Kiev in the second leg of the 2022-23 UEFA Champions League play-off round, assisting his side to qualify for the tournament.

On 2 November, he scored his first UEFA Champions League goal of the season, kicking off Benfica’s UEFA Champions League group stage victory over Maccabi Haifa, ensuring the club’s progression to the next round.

Ramos represented Portugal’s under-17 team at the 2018 UEFA European Under-17 Championship in England. He appeared in two matches in this competition, scoring a goal against Slovenia in a group stage exit.

Ramos was a member of Portugal’s squad that finished second to Spain in the 2019 UEFA European Under-19 Championship in Armenia.

He led the team in scoring with four goals in five games, including a hat-trick in a 4-0 semi-final victory over the Republic of Ireland.

Ramos was called up to the senior team for the first time on September 20, 2022, to replace Rafa Silva, who retired from international football, for the upcoming 2022-23 UEFA Nations League matches against the Czech Republic and Spain. Ramos was named to Portugal’s 26-man squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar on November 10.

On November 17, he made his senior international debut against Nigeria, scoring the third goal and assisting on the fourth in a 4-0 victory.

In place of Cristiano Ronaldo, he started and scored in Portugal’s second round World Cup match against Switzerland on December 6.
