Roslyn Pope, a musician and college professor, has died. In 1960, she wrote “An Appeal for Human Rights,” which explained why the Atlanta Student Movement against systemic racism was important. She turned 84.
According to an obituary written by her family, Pope died on January 18 in Arlington, Texas. She had moved there from Atlanta to be with her daughters when her health started to get worse in 2021.
The document Pope wrote as a 21-year-old senior at Spelman College started a nonviolent campaign of boycotts and sit-ins by Black college students protesting discrimination not just in voting but also in education, jobs, housing, hospitals, movies, concerts, restaurants, and law enforcement.
