A parent’s complaint that sixth graders were exposed to pornography during a course on Renaissance art that included Michelangelo’s “David” sculpture led the principal of a Florida charter school to resign.
Hope Carrasquilla, the principal of Tallahassee Classical School, reportedly resigned last week in response to a threat from the head of the school board, according to The Tallahassee Democrat.
According to Carrasquilla, two other parents requested notification of the lesson before it was taught to their children, and one parent stated the material was sexual. The “Creation of Adam” picture by Michelangelo and “Birth of Venus” by Botticelli were also included in the lesson.
The nudity of the “David” statue has been a topic of discussion on the limitations of art and censorship laws for many years.
