An 18-year-old has been taken into custody by Winston-Salem police after Forsyth Tech was the target of gunfire earlier on Thursday morning.
Shannon Howard James Pitts, 18, of Winston-Salem, shot himself in the hand, according to the police, and was found next to the restroom at the Strickland Center. At a Focus event held on campus, more than 600 high school students were present at the Forsyth Tech campus.
According to a public record release, Pitts was charged with two counts of having a weapon on school premises and one count of having a concealed weapon.
The student was reportedly treated for non-life-threatening injuries and then released from the hospital, according to the police.
The pupil was given a $25,000 surety bail.
