Amy Silverstein, author of Sick Girl (Grove Atlantic, 2007) which won a “Books for a Better Life Award” in 2008 and was a finalist for the Border’s Original Voices Award died at the age of 59 on May 5.
Amy’s husband, Scott Silverstein, confirmed her cause of death as cancer. She lived in Chappaqua, N.Y.
After “Sick Girl” was released, Ms. Silverstein got reams of fan mail from other transplant recipients, congratulating her for her bravery in exposing the peculiar contrast between happiness and suffering that may come with life with a new organ, or what she dubbed the “gratitude paradox.”
