Robert Clayton Powell Car Accident: Victim identified in fatal Thursday night crash on U.S. Highway 287 in Wichita County.
The victim of a tragic collision on U.S. Highway 287 on Thursday night has been identified by authorities from the Texas Department of Public Safety. This is the fourth person to die as a result of collisions on the road since Mother’s Day.
Sgt. Marc Couch with the DPS reports that the collision happened on U.S. Highway 287, west of the Harmony Road exit and west of Iowa Park, at around 9:20 p.m. on Thursday, May 18, 2023.
In the DPS accident report, Sgt. Couch noted that a 2019 Dodge pickup truck with damage from an earlier collision was in the left-hand lane of northbound U.S. 287. At the time of the collision, he claimed, it was pouring and the road was wet.
According to Sgt. Couch, a truck tractor pulling a semi-trailer was approaching the broken-down pickup while heading northbound on U.S. 287 in the left-hand lane. The pickup was hit by the truck tractor.
According to Sgt. Couch, Robert Clayton Powell, 32, of Electra passed away at the scene of the collision. At 10:15 p.m., he was pronounced dead.
Since Sunday, May 14, 2023, there have been three fatal crashes on a section of U.S. Highway 287, resulting in four deaths that have been verified by the DPS in just five days.
