In the Town of Fenton, a high school student was killed after being hit by a train while he was crossing the tracks.
Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a 911 call about a pedestrian-train accident at the Crocker Hill Rd section of the Town of Fenton on May 30, 2023, at about 8:54 am.
Jakob McCloe, a pedestrian who was a 17-year-old Chenango Valley High School student and resident of Port Crane, was declared dead at the site.
Following a probe by the investigators of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office, it was discovered that McCloe had been strolling westward along the Norfolk Southern Railroad Tracks close to Crocker Hill Road. McCloe walked, unable to hear the incoming train since it looked he was wearing noise-cancelling headphones. McCloe didn’t appear to be aware that the train was coming despite the engineer’s repeated attempts to draw his attention. At 8:53 a.m., McCloe was hit by the train and died because the engineer was powerless to stop it.
Sheriff Fred Akshar stated, “Our detectives have found that this awful loss of life was nothing other than a horrific accident. This was done after a comprehensive investigation of the area, lengthy interviews, and a study of video footage of the train. Our thoughts are with Jakob McCloe’s family, friends, and the Chenango Valley High School community on behalf of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office.
