It is with great sadness that I announce the
passing of mom’s only sibling Sally Green Sanders who died earlier today from end stage dementia.
As I’ve said, before, life is full of goodbyes. My partner, Anthony Santos passed away a mere six months ago. That was particularly difficult for me, as is the death of my aunt.
My mom and my aunt grew up in Passaic , New Jersey, where they were known as” the Green sisters with the beautiful smiles”
My aunt and I had a very close relationship from the time I was a little boy. She gave me attention encouragement, and unconditional love . Why she was my biggest fan growing up!
This closeness persisted throughout all my years until about a year and a half ago when she became nonverbal. Even though we lived on opposite coasts we would have long phone conversations that seemed endless.
Whenever she would come to Los Angeles to visit her daughter, Lisa, we would always spend time together. We’d have lunch , browse through art galleries in Beverly Hills and laugh. Whenever I visited New York I would always rent a car to go visit her in New Jersey. It was a mutual connection with unstoppable love.
When her dementia worsened over the last couple years, we lost that connection and I felt as if I had lost my right arm . But it wasn’t until she actually passed this afternoon did it hit me like a ton of bricks .
My Aunt Sally had a child like quality about her. She was timeless and she was always fun. She loved to dance and you will see the zest for life she had in the video clip that my cousin Jessica sent me several weeks ago.
She had some amazing qualities, but what stands out the most was her sensitivity and empathy toward others, and an intuitive nature that made her very wise. I would like to think that I gleaned some of those qualities from her.
She was an amazing wife to my Uncle Lenny, who passed away several years ago, as well as a amazing mother to my cousins Lisa and Richard. She adored my mother, her only sibling, and they had a very close relationship.
She was also very close to all of my siblings as well as myself. She never missed a family event.
She will forever remain in my heart and memory.
