Det. Luca Benedetti was killed in a shooting in 2021, and San Luis Obispo police on Wednesday revealed video of the incident. The video reveals that a mentally ill guy opened fire after police knocked down the door and tried to execute a search warrant.
The “deeply disturbing” video was released more than two years after the event at the Camellia Court apartment complex. Det. Steve Orozco was also hurt in the incident on May 10 and Edward Giron died as a result.
Giron had 14 gunshot wounds, including a fatal, possibly self-inflicted head wound, according to an autopsy ordered by his family. Rick Scott, the police chief in San Luis Obispo, claims that Giron later seized Benedetti’s firearm and shot himself in the head with it.
San Luis Obispo Police Chief Rick Scott describes what happened on the day that Benedetti and Giron died and what was discovered during the investigation in a video that the city has made available. Scott claims that long before the fatal encounter, cops had been informed that Giron had shown symptoms of paranoia and was distrustful of law enforcement. Officers checked on Giron’s welfare in July 2020 and discovered he was not in distress.
An earlier welfare check report was also discovered by the officers. A short while later, Giron’s family member informed authorities that Giron might have a gun at his residence. Officers searched the apartment but were unable to locate Giron. They fled because they lacked a search warrant at the time.
