Egbert Gaye Obituary – Cause of Death: In loving memory of Egbert Gaye, a Montreal ‘true champion.’
Egbert Gaye, the publisher and managing editor of a community publication that served the English-speaking Black population of Montreal for more than three decades, has passed away. Gaye passed away Sunday night.
When word of his passing spread, social media erupted with condolences. Gaye had been the organization’s director from its beginning in 1992. The newspaper is renowned for delivering uplifting news articles concerning the Black communities in the city. He also provided several Black authors with opportunity to start their careers in journalism and a platform for columnists to produce opinion pieces that explored the Black experience in Quebec.
The Montreal Community Contact said in a statement on Facebook on Monday afternoon that Gaye’s passing “leaves a void that will be felt by the entire community, especially his beloved wife, son, and daughter-in-law.”
“It is with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to a true champion of our community, Egbert Gaye. Today, we mourn the loss of an extraordinary leader, whose tireless efforts have left an indelible impact on the Black community,” a tribute post shared via Facebook read.
