Chris Wagner Obituary: In loving memory of Wintergreen Police officer shot and killed near Arrowood Lane.
According to representatives from the Virginia State Police and the Wintergreen Police Department, police officer Mark Christopher “Chris” Wagner II passed away on Friday night following an altercation with a Maryland man in the woods close to Arrowood Lane.
Virginia State Police, who are in charge of the investigation, say that Wagner was called to the Arrowood Lane residence at around 10 p.m. on Friday.
The suspect, Daniel M. Barmak, 23, of Towson, Maryland, was in the surrounding woods when Wagner arrived, according to the police, and “a struggle ensued.”
Barmak fired and killed the officer while they struggled for Wagner’s department-issued weapon, according to the Virginia State Police spokeswoman. “During the encounter, Barrak was also shot.”
The officer was shot during the scuffle and passed away on the spot, according to the Virginia State Police spokeswoman.
According to officials, Barmak was apprehended “without further incident by Wintergreen Police and the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office.”
With non-life threatening wounds, Barmak and the two 23-year-old men who fled the Arrowood Lane home were also taken to UVA Medical Center.
