Jesse Trevino Obituary – Cause of Death: Legendary San Antonio artist Jesse Trevino dies at 76.
Jesse Trevino passed away on Monday morning, February 13, at the age of 76.
The legendary San Antonio artist had suffered his second bout with cancer more than a year ago, and then with COVID and pneumonia late last year.
Treviño, a Mexican-American visual artist based in San Antonio, Texas. His murals largely depict the Mexican American community of San Antonio, and he was considered to be one of the city’s most famous artists.
Treviño’s first mural-sized work was Mi Vida, 1972, painted on the wall of his home at West Mistletoe Avenue, San Antonio. The mural took two years to paint, and depicted the aftereffects of his service in Vietnam. This mural would be removed and taken on tour in the Smithsonian Museum’s exhibit on Vietnam War art. Treviño has called this work “the most important pieces that have all of the piece’s [he’s] ever done.”
The Spirit of Healing is a mural that Treviño completed in 1997. It is located on the Christus Santa Rosa Hospital (now The Children’s Hospital) of San Antonio, and is the largest tile mural in the United States at 93 feet high and 43 feet wide.
