After a collision in the town of Freeport on Thursday night that claimed five lives, a 28-year-old Sacramento man is in custody.
According to the California Highway Patrol South Sacramento, police were sent to the River Road crash, just south of the Freeport area, shortly before 5:30 p.m. to look into a report of a car crashing with a tree and leaving the road. Five adults—three males and two females—died in the accident.
The CHP reported that a carjacking took place nearby shortly after the collision. When reporting the carjacking, the witness provided a description of the suspect and the car over the phone to 911.
According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, deputies who were dispatched to the scene were able to find the stolen car and the suspect, who was thought to have been a passenger in the car that had been in the earlier collision.
Into Elk Grove, the suspect led a pursuit. Between Elk Grove Boulevard and Fire Poppy Road, the chase came to a stop.
After being captured, the suspect was brought to a nearby hospital with moderate wounds. Cameron Garcia, a resident of Sacramento and 28 years old, has been identified by CHP.
