Luke Cooper Car Accident: Following a deadly collision on I-79, the Moon Township neighborhood is in sorrow over the loss of a high school senior.
According to the police, Luke Cooper, 18, was driving when he crossed some standing water, started to hydroplane, lost control of his vehicle, and slammed into a guide rail.
His school’s hockey team and the local hockey community offer their condolences.
Cooper’s family, who requested privacy but sent Channel 11 News one of his senior pictures, spoke with us on Thursday.
Cooper, a senior at Moon Area High School, participated in the Moon Hockey Association and played varsity hockey for the district. To remember their friends and teammates, other players left hockey sticks outside of their doors on Thursday.
According to state police, a single-vehicle accident on I-79 in Franklin Park, just north of the I-279 split, prompted the request for emergency services just after 10 p.m.
Cooper was dead when state police arrived.
Cooper was wearing a seatbelt, according to the police, but it was torn off in the collision.
The Moon Area School District expressed its sympathy and said that it would provide grief counselors.
