According to the Ontario Provincial Police, the human remains found in Lake Ontario west of Kingston have been identified as a prison guard who went missing over four decades ago.
In January, an investigation was initiated after a vehicle veered off the road and plunged into the water near Amherstview, Ont.
Human remains were discovered by police divers during a search, in another vehicle.
According to police reports on Wednesday, the individual who was found deceased has been identified as David Hannah. Hannah was 36 years old at the time of his disappearance in 1983.
On January 4th of that year, Hannah was reported missing after leaving his residence in Amherstview en route to work at the Millhaven Institution. Two weeks later, he was reported missing.
In 2011, a $50,000 reward was issued by the police for any information regarding Hannah’s case, as they suspected foul play and believed that he had been murdered.
According to police reports, the cause of Hannah’s death is still under investigation as of Wednesday. The investigation is being carried out by the chief coroner’s office and the centre of forensic sciences.
Earlier this month, a vehicle was recovered by police dive teams near the intersection of the Loyalist Parkway and County Road 6. The recovery was facilitated by the use of a barge.
The public is urged to reach out to the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 if they possess any information.
